Matthew Young is managing director of Shellshear Young and lead designer.  He has over 25 years’ experience in architecture and urban design with extensive experience in healthcare facility design and commissioning throughout Australia.  Matthew is responsible for the design direction and management of the practice and focuses on strategies that address the complexities and potential of projects in competitive urban environments.  He has a strong commitment to the production of architecture that is contemporary, sensitive to contextual settings, and blends creative design with functional and programmatic planning.  His portfolio spans large scale medical centres, diagnostic imaging and nuclear medicine suites, fertility clinics, laboratories, day procedure units, adaptation of heritage buildings, residential projects, commercial refurbishments, and fitouts.

Matthew has experience with a range companies and government agencies including Primary Health Care, Hunt Leather, ALH Group, Staged Developments Australia, Australian Commonwealth Government, Victorian Government, Supreme Court of Victoria, Government of Western Australia, Royal Botanical Gardens Melbourne, University of Melbourne, and Melbourne City Council.

Matthew holds a Bachelor of Architecture and Diploma of Horticulture.


Douglas Kennedy has over 20 years’ experience in healthcare and aged care projects throughout Australia.  He has held the position of lead designer for major healthcare projects including several $100m + private hospitals throughout NSW, primary health care facilities, mental health units, Qingdao Health and Aged Care Campus Masterplan, Berkeley Vale Private Hospital, and Warners Bay Private Hospital.

Douglas has completed advanced medical projects including cardiac catheterisation laboratories, intensive care units, coronary care units, cardiac and operating theatre suites, and neo-natal intensive care nurseries.

Prior to joining Shellshear Young Douglas worked with many of Australia’s leading healthcare providers including Ramsay Health, Community Private Health Care, Brisbane Waters Private Hospital, Anglican Retirement Villages, Catholic Health Care Services, and Southern Cross Care.

Douglas holds a Bachelor of Science (Architecture) and Bachelor of Architecture (Honours).


Colin Davidson has 8 years’ experience as an architect in Australia and Scotland.  His Australian portfolio includes medical centres and imaging facilities, corporate offices, residential age care and retirement facilities, and mixed use developments.  His UK experience included branch redevelopment for the Royal Bank of Scotland and refurbishment of Basil Spence Library for the University of Edinburgh.

Prior to joining Shellshear Young Colin was the project architect for RSL Lifecare’s headquarters including corporate offices, restaurants, bars, museum, convention centre, and independent living units.

Colin holds a Bachelor of Architecture (Honours) and Post Graduate Diploma in Architecture and Urbanism.




Irene Brugueras has 10 years’ experience in high end projects throughout Spain and Australia.  She held the position of lead designer for ‘Casa AA’ house in Barcelona under internationally acclaimed architect Carlos Ferrater in OAB office in Barcelona.  In OAB Irene specialised in the design of residential complexes, houses, and works to heritage buildings.  Prior to joining Shellshear Young Irene worked with Sydney architect, Luigi Rosselli on high-end residential projects.

Irene holds a Bachelor of Architect (Hons), Masters Degree in Interior Design, and Masters Degree in Project Management.






Jack Reynolds has 8 years’ experience in commercial and healthcare projects throughout Australia.  His design experience includes a diverse portfolio of commercial, healthcare and laboratory projects including the Norwest Private Hospital expansion, Queensland University Sleep Laboratory, and Fertility SA Centre.

Jack has worked with many of Australia’s leading healthcare providers and research organisations including Primary Health Care, Healthscope, St Andrew’s Hospital, NSW Health, SA Health, Sonic Healthcare, Genesis Care, Central Queensland University, University of Adelaide, and University of South Australia.

Jack holds a Masters in Architecture, Graduate Diploma in Urban and Regional Planning, and Green Star accreditation.

Tim Shellshear – Consultant

Tim Shellshear established the practice of Tim Shellshear Architect in 1975 whilst living in Grafton.  As a country practice, it became widespread covering most of NSW.  Returning to Sydney in 1992 the practice became Tim Shellshear and Associates Architects Pty Ltd and remained as such until 2014 when it became ShellshearYoung.  Tim has over forty years experience in architecture, for the first twenty principally in heritage and urban architecture and then in the last twenty years principally in healthcare facility design.  Since 1995 Tim has been closely involved with Primary Health Care Limited and has established a portfolio of 70 + medical centres, diagnostic imaging facilities, laboratories, and day procedure units across Australia.
